Smith leads way for UND at ZJ Invitational

West Des Moines, Iowa --  The North Dakota men's golf team opened play at the Zach Johnson Invitational on Monday with junior Jordan Smith leading the way for the Fighting Hawks. Smith opened with a 76 (+5), which was the team's low round of the day and also posted the best 36-hole total with a 158 (+16) to sit in a tie for 47th.

Classmate Jeremy Kirk was second among the Fighting Hawks, who posted a 658 (+90) total during the opening two rounds at the Glen Oaks Country Club. Kirk regrouped from an opening 84 (+13) to lead UND with a 79 (+8) on his second loop around the par-71 layout.

Freshman Cole Kerns carded a pair of 82's during the day, which featured calm conditions for the opening rounds before wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour blew through the area in the afternoon.

South Dakota leads Indian Hills Community College by a stroke in the chase for the team title. The Coyotes shot a 586 (+18) to pace the 11-team field. Drake's Drew Ison put together a pair of even-par 71's to hold a one-shot lead in the race for medalist honors by a stroke as well.

UND wraps up its fall season with third-round play on Tuesday.
