GRAND FORKS, N.D. – National Hockey League rosters will feature 16 products of the University of North Dakota when the NHL raises the curtain on its regular season tonight.
The group is once again headlined by three-time Stanley Cup champion and Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. North Dakota’s newest NHLer is defenseman Tucker Poolman, who signed with the Winnipeg Jets following his junior season in 2016-17. Two of Poolman’s UND teammates from last season, Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks and Tyson Jost of the Colorado Avalanche, have also made their respective opening-night NHL rosters.
Zach Parise of the Minnesota Wild is the elder statesman among UND’s current NHLers, having played 830 games over 12 seasons.
Additionally, several more UND alumni serve in coaching or management positions in the NHL, including Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach Dave Hakstol, Dallas Stars Assistant Coach Rick Wilson, Arizona Coyotes Video Coach Steve Peters, Calgary Flames Assistant General Manager Brad Pascall, Minnesota Wild Director of Player Development Brad Bombardir, Vancouver Canucks Director of Player Development Ryan Johnson, and New York Rangers Director of Professional Scouting Kevin Maxwell.
Last season, a school-record 22 UND products played in the NHL, topping the previous school record of 21 that was set in 1991-92 and matched in 1993-94.
