Summit League to consider UND for potential membership

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple announced today that the league will begin the evaluation process of the University of North Dakota's potential membership.

Douple indicated that the evaluation is a multi-step process that could include a site visit to the UND campus by the end of 2010. The decision to move forward with the evaluation of UND's potential membership was made at The Summit League's President's meeting in Chicago on Monday.

"UND is pleased to be considered for membership in The Summit League," said UND Director of Athletics Brian Faison. "We look forward to beginning the process."

The Summit League, formed in 1982 and formerly known as the Mid-Continent Conference, consists of 10 member institutions: Centenary College, IPFW, IUPUI, UMKC, North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. An 11th member, South Dakota, will join The Summit League in 2011-12.

Fifteen of UND's 20 sports currently compete as members of the Great West Conference. UND's men's and women's hockey teams are members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) while the men's golf team competes in the America Sky Conference. UND's men's and women's swimming and diving teams are without conference affiliation but compete in the Conference USA Championship.

UND's Current Conference Affiliations

Great West Conference: Baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, women's golf, soccer, softball, tennis, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's outdoor track and field and volleyball

Western Collegiate Hockey Association: Men's and women's hockey

America Sky Conference: Men's golf

Conference USA (non-member, compete in championship only): Men's and women's swimming and diving
