Chandler, Ariz. - Freshman Abbie Mozzetti carded a 77 (+5) to lead the North Dakota women’s golf team to a first-round score of 330 (+42) at what is the squad’s inaugural Big Sky Championship. Mozzetti was even par through her first 12 holes before finish five-over par on her final six holes of the day at the Ocotillo Golf Resort.

Seniors Robin Hutchinson and Megan Grozdanich both overcame slow starts to break 40 on the back nine and finish with respective scores of 82 (+10) and 85 (+13) on the par 72, 6,169-yard layout.

“It was a good start – one of our better rounds of the spring season,” UND head coach Natalie Martinson said. “Abbie started off really well and finished with a good score and we played much better on the back nine as a whole, which should give us some confidence going into tomorrow’s second round.”

Sophomore Amanda Fairweather’s score of 86 (+14) also counted towards the team score as she got her round going late as well, finishing with a 39 on the back side.

Portland State leads the 11-team field with a 290 (+2) on Sunday. The Vikings had three players break par and senior Britney Yada leads the individual race after posting a 70 (-2). Host Northern Arizona (299, +11) is 10 shots back in second and leads a pack of four teams separated by just two strokes.

Mozzetti, who led the team with a pair of birdies on her round, shot an even par 36 on her opening nine holes. Grozdanich was just one-over par on the back side, while Hutchinson carded a 39.

Montana and Montana State are tied for eighth and eight strokes ahead of UND after posting scores of 322 (+34), respectively.  Round two is set for Monday.
