GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison announced Friday that head men’s basketball coach Brian Jones has signed a contract extension that will take him through the 2016-17 season.

"Coach Jones has a clear blue print for this program and the results are showing," Faison said. "This team has had as much success as any team transitioning to the Division I level in recent years, including three straight CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament berths.

"We saw the immediate success his team had during its first year in the Big Sky. With the program heading in the right direction, we are happy to show him this level of commitment by extending his contract."

Jones led UND to a 12-8 record in the Big Sky Conference last season, which were the most wins ever by a league newcomer and his squad’s third-place finish in the 11-team league was also the best ever by a first-year member. With a 16-16 regular season record, the team also earned its third straight appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

"I am extremely grateful for this commitment from both President (Robert) Kelley and Mr. Faison," Jones said. "This will allow our program to continue to establish ourselves not only in the Big Sky Conference, but also among other Mid-Major programs."

Junior Troy Huff was one of two unanimous All-Big Sky First Team selections after leading the league in scoring at 19.2 ppg. He was named to the All-Big Sky Tournament Team and the Lou Henson Mid Major All-American Team. Classmate Aaron Anderson averaged a
career-high 13.3 ppg en route to All-Big Sky Second Team accolades.

Jones will have that dynamic scoring duo back along with five more of his top eight scorers for the 2013-14 season that will also see the addition of Texas Tech transfer Jaron Nash to the roster.

UND will play another 20-game Big Sky schedule in 2013-14 and will also play homes games against South Dakota State and North Dakota State. The entire 2013-14 schedule will be released later in July.
