GREENLEY, COLO. --- The University of North Dakota softball team made a great comeback to defeat Big Sky competitor Northern Colorado 6-4.

Northern Colorado took an early lead in the game after the scored a run in the second inning and then two more in the third, making it a 3-0 lead.

UND’s Elizabeth Cudney (Montague, Mich.) doubled to right center in the fourth inning. Brittany Baker (Buena Park, Calif.) grounded out to shortstop advancing Cudney to third. Megan Keegan (Elk Grove, Ill.) reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the throw scoring Cudney.

Baker homered to center field to start off the sixth. Keegan singled to right center and Taylor Donnelly (Lakeville, Minn.) pinch ran for Keegan. Kenna Olsen (Issaquah, Wash.) pinch hit for Emily Bell (Elgin, Ill.) and singled up the middle, advancing Donnelly to second. Bell replaced Olsen on first and Gonzales pinch hit for Taylor Hansen (Chelsea, Mich.) who singled up the middle, advancing Bell to second. Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) then singled up the middle scoring Donnelly.

Northern Colorado made a pitching change to try to put a stop to UND’s success, but was unable to stop North Dakota from getting another run.

Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.) pinch hit for Nicole Babrowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and singled up the middle scoring Bell to make it a 4-3 game.

Northern Colorado answered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

UND scored two more runs in the seventh. Cudney reached on an error by the third baseman and Baker had a sacrifice bunt to advance Cudney to second. Keegan popped up to catcher, advancing Cudney to third. Amanda Johnson (Ashby, Minn.) homered to left field scoring the final two runs of the game, making it a 6-4 final.

“The team fought hard for this win today,” said head coach Eric Oakley. “We are nursing some injuries and are definitely not 100 percent, but we never gave up. Credit goes to Michelle and Emma for doing their jobs in the circle, and Elizabeth Cudney for sparking the offense.”
