PATCHOGUE, N.Y.- A six-run second inning propelled host NYIT to a 12-5 win over UND Sunday afternoon at St. John's College in the series finale of a Great West Conference. The teams split the series two games apiece.

"We put oursleves in a big hole early and were never able to recover from it ," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "We settled down a little bit on the mound, but never did make the adjustments at the plate and didn't get any big two-out hits."

UND (13-17-1, 4-8 GWC) tied the score in the top half of the second after the Bears had homered to leadoff their half of the first. The next half-inning saw NYIT (7-36, 5-11) put up six innings to chase UND starter Ben Clark as the Bears held a 7-1 advantage.

North Dakota got two back in the third on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Reese and a Taylor Petersen RBI double. But, NYIT had answers in the fourth and fifth, scoring two in the former and three in the latter to build a comfortable 12-3 cushion.

UND got two more in the seventh inning and was poised to put a bigger dent into the deficit, but left the bases loaded to end the inning and NYIT escaped with the series split.

Patrick Vandoorne had three hits Sunday to lead the UND attack. Petersen and Daniel Lockhert each added a pair.

North Dakota will finally open the home portion of its schedule this Friday, hosting Texas-Pan American for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. UND will play its final 13 regular season games at Kraft Memorial Field.
