GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- It was billed as a pitcher's duel. Instead, UND piled-on 14 runs in the fourth inning alone as the home team routed New Jersey Institute of Technology, 25-5, Friday evening at Kraft Memorial Field in the opener of a Great West Conference series. UND second baseman Daniel Lockhert drove-in a school-record 10 runs in the win, including a fifth-inning grand slam after 19 UND batters headed to the plate just one inning prior.

NJIT (17-27, 9-11 GWC) starter Mark Leiter (5-7), who had struck out a Division I-high 20 batters in his last outing, went just three innings while walking six to set the tone for a game in which a dozen base on balls were issued to UND batters. That long fourth inning kept UND starter Andrew Thome (5-5) in the dugout for 38 minutes, but he was able to return for his fifth and final inning to get his fifth win of the season.

Although the game started innocently enough, UND (18-18-1, 8-9 GWC) scored in each of its last five innings to record a season-high for runs.  NJIT actually held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, producing a run on a single, a stolen base, a sacrifice and another single to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.

North Dakota scored a pair of runs in the second on the benefit of just one hit, walking four times and getting bases-loaded walks from Sam Alt and Kris Kwak to take the lead. UND added two more in the third on Lockhert's double to center that fooled the NJIT centerfielder.

The inauspicious fourth for NJIT saw three different pitchers toe the mound. Jacob Threlkeld went 1-for-3 in that inning alone, starting the frame with a harmless flyout to left and 18 batters later, ending it with a flyout to center with a bunt single in between. All kinds of damage happened with one out on the scoreboard as 14 straight UND batters reached base.

An error scored the first run with RBI knocks from Jeff Campbell, Tyler Follis, Lockhert and Alt following. After three straight runs came across with a hit (hit by pitch and two walk), Lockhert laced a double to score three runs for his fourth hit and sixth RBI of the game.

Batting with a 20-2 lead in the next inning, Lockhert launched a deep flyball into the strong wind blowing out to left as it easily cleared the fence for his first career homer and a record-setting day at the plate. Lockhert came into the game with four career RBI in 11 starts and helped UND to its third game of 16+ runs this season (all in the last 11 games).

Every UND starter scored at least once in the blowout and Zack Trygstad posted the unusual 0-for-3 with five runs and two RBI line. Campbell drove in four while Ryan Reese and Taylor Petersen each crossed home three times.

Thome pitched five innings with six hits and two runs allowed for North Dakota. After Trent Egan threw an inning and a third, Pete Gagne made his second appearance of the season, getting the final two outs with two hits and an unearned run.

UND and NJIT continue the season Saturday at Kraft with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.

Notes: UND has scored 100 runs in its last 11 games combined ... Lockhert's 10 RBI broke the record previoudly held by Jake Magner, who had nine in an April 24, 2010 game vs. NYIT ... Trygstad's five runs tied the school record for a game (Magner, Troy Wasiloski, Grant Geiszler) ... Kwak's leadoff walk-- one of three on the day-- made him the sole owner of the school's walk record (109).
