The North Dakota football team debunked the tendency to regress after a strong opening practice on Friday by putting together another solid session during its second practice of fall camp.

"I think we've had two really good practices to get things started," head coach Chris Mussman said. "We are throwing a lot at them, especially the younger guys, but I'm pleased with how things are progressing so far. And, now we just have to build off of these first two and keep working hard."

Working out under overcast skies and cool temperatures Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium, the team went through a similar two-hour session from yesterday. Individual work among the position groups took precendence early in the practice before team drills closed with work on the two-minute drill.

The team was only in helmets again for the second straight day, but will add shells for Sunday's morning practice. Mussman said there would be a little more contact and interior work along the offensive and defensive lines.

  • Both starting middle linebackers corralled interceptions during team drills on Saturday. Junior Garrison Goodman (San Ramon, Calif.) picked off a deflected pass during the initial team session and sophomore Ben Peters (Chandler, Ariz.) stepped in front of a pass during the two-minute work.
  • If they can hold on to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, both Goodman and Peters will be first-year starters in 2012 as the duo is replacing Dan Hendrickson and Mitch Goertz in middle.
  • Mussman was impressed with the transition the newcomers have made from day one to day two, especially the trio of freshman quarterbacks on the roster. "I'm excited about the future of that position," Mussman said. "We're going to have to travel one or maybe two of them this season and even if we don't have to pull their redshirt, the experience they will get from traveling and preparing for a game is going to put them ahead of the curve of most freshman in the country."
