GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota men’s basketball head coach Brian Jones announced the addition of two Division I transfers to his roster on Tuesday. Jones added 6-foot-10 center Chad Calcaterra, who will be eligible for the 2013-14 campaign, and 6-foot-1 point guard Estan Tyler, who will sit out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“We are excited to add Chad and Estan to our UND family,” Jones said. “They both have Division I experience and fill immediate needs for our roster. Chad possesses the size and athleticism that we will need in the frontcourt to battle Big Sky opponents this season and Estan is a proven player at the Division I level. His playmaking and scoring ability will be a nice addition next season after (current point guards) Aaron (Anderson) and Jamal (Webb) graduate.”

Calcaterra spent two seasons at Colorado State before spending the 2012-13 season at Western Nebraska Community College. He averaged 3.6 ppg for the Cougars during his sophomore season.

A native of Cloquet, Minn., Calcaterra will have two seasons of eligibility to play at UND. He redshirted during the 2010-11 season at Colorado State before seeing action in 15 games during the 2011-12 campaign, including the Rams’ NCAA Tournament opening round game vs. Murray State.

Calcaterra, who will wear No. 33 for UND, holds the Cloquet single-season scoring mark that he set as a junior in 2008-09 season and was a Minnesota Class 2A All-State performer as a senior.

Tyler spent his first two collegiate seasons at Kansas City in the Summit League. After averaging 5.3 ppg in 20 starts as a freshman, Tyler led the Kangaroos in scoring this past season, averaging 11.2 ppg in 31 starts. He also averaged 3.0 apg in both of his campaigns at UMKC.

Tyler scored 12 points in a UMKC victory over UND at the Betty last season (Dec. 5) and scored a career-high 25 points at South Dakota in the only game he did not start for the Roos in 2012-13. He missed the UMKC-UND matchup during his freshman season due to an injury. He will sit out this season and have two remaining seasons of eligibility starting in 2014-15.

A prep standout for Johnson High School in St. Paul, Minn., Tyler was the St. Paul Pioneer Press Class 3A Player of the Year as a senior after averaging 18.0 ppg. As a junior, he led Johnson in scoring and helped the club to a 32-0 record and state title.

UND will begin its second season as a member of the Big Sky Conference in 2013-14. The Green and White finished third this past season and set a league record by winning 12 conference games, which were the most ever by a newcomer.
