MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Jakob Bissell got North Dakota off to a smashing start today at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational.

Bissell smashed his own 2-year old school record in the outdoor hammer throw in one of two men’s events that opened the 3-day meet. Bissell, from Plymouth, N.H., hit a mark of 186 feet, 5 inches to topple the previous record of 180-02 he set at the 2012 Great West Conference Championship.

The other men’s competition on day one was the 10K run, in which UND’s Parker Wharram established a new personal record. The Independence, Minn., product took 40 seconds off of his previous PR by crossing the line in 32 minutes, 56.87 seconds. He placed seventh.

Day two of competition takes place Friday at Hough Shaw Stadium.
