GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota men’s basketball head coach Brian Jones announced on Wednesday that Waterloo, Iowa native Jaron (Juh-ron) Nash will join the Fighting Sioux program for the 2012-13 season. Nash will transfer from Texas Tech where he was a redshirt sophomore last season.

Nash is currently seeking a waiver from the NCAA to make an exception regarding the organization’s year-in-residence requirement that would allow a 4-4 transfer like himself to play immediately for UND next season due to family considerations.

“We are excited to announce the final addition to our 2012-13 roster in Texas Tech transfer Jaron Nash,” Jones said. “My staff has done an unbelievable job of adding depth to our team for next fall and Jaron’s addition really solidifies our roster.

“His ability to play multiple positions for us on both sides of the ball will allow us to be very versatile and Jaron’s experience in a high-major Division I program will also bring a new dynamic to our lockerroom.”

The 6-foot-8 forward played just over eight minutes per game in his first season at TTU, averaging 2.5 ppg and 1.5 rpg for head coach Billy Gillespie. Nash shot 50 percent from the floor (28-for-56) during the season and scored a season-high 15 points against Wake Forest in Tech’s final game of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., around Thanksgiving.

He spent two seasons at Tyler Junior College before his stint with the Red Raiders. After redshirting during the 2009-10 season, Nash averaged 11.0 ppg and 4.3 rpg for the Apaches in 2010-11.

Nash was an all-state and all-conference performer at Waterloo East High School as a senior, averaging 17.1 ppg and 6.1 rpg. He was also named City MVP following his final prep season.

Nash will join JUCO-forwards Ryan Salmonson and Alonzo Traylor, who signed NLI’s during April, as newcomers on the roster next season.

“With us embarking on the Big Sky conference, we wanted to make sure our roster was ready to compete on a consistent basis,” Jones added. “And, with the addition of Jaron, Alonzo and Ryan, we feel like it is.”

UND will transition to the Big Sky Conference in 2012-13 after winning back-to-back Great West Conference Tournament titles.
