GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota’s Jayd Eggert, D'Monte Farley and Shawn Johnson have all qualified for the preliminary championship competition of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships. The trio will compete in the West Preliminary Championship Competition hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, May 23-25.
Eggert, Farley and Johnson are the first NCAA Division I qualifiers in UND track and field history.
Johnson is a dual qualifier who will compete in both the shot put and discus. The junior from Eveleth, Minn., advanced with a shot put throw of 17.35 meters and a discus mark of 53.94 meters. He hit his shot put mark on March 13 at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational, while his discus qualifier came at the NDSU Tune-Up on May 3. Johnson enters nationals ranked second in the Big Sky Conference in the discus and third in the shot put.
Last weekend, Johnson became UND’s first Division I all-conference performer when he placed third in the shot put at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship. He also placed sixth in the discus.
Eggert, a freshman from Minot, N.D., will compete in the javelin after qualifying with a mark of 45.40 meters at the Beach Invitational on April 19. She will enter the meet ranked eighth in the Big Sky Conference.
Farley, a freshman from Cottage Grove, Minn., will compete in the triple jump after recording a mark of 14.97 meters at the Shamrock Invitational on March 13. He currently ranks second in the Big Sky Conference.
