SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Following the first day of competition at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of North Dakota sits in eighth place with 26 points. San Jose State is in the lead with 74 points followed by Northern Arizona (72) and New Mexico State (64). Hawaii is in fourth with a score of 62, and Idaho (56), Fresno State (50) and Nevada (46) round out the eight-team roster.

North Dakota opened the meet with the 200 medley relay, but the team of junior Veronica Medon (Huntsville, Ontario), sophomore Camille Merwin (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), senior Caitlin Conci (Craig, Colo.), and freshman Rachael Wessman (Fargo, N.D.) posted no time due to disqualification.

"We thought that we were off to a pretty good start with the 400 medley relay, but then about two minutes after the event, we found out that we had been disqualified," head coach Steve Parsons said. "It was a malfunction with the relay take off pads that I really think cost on that one."

UND pulled out a sixth-place finish in the 800 free relay as the team of sophomore Kelsey Richels (Wahpeton, N.D.), junior Kara Fisher (Fergus Falls, Minn.), sophomore Moran Lynch (Elk River, Minn.), and freshman Erin Grabanski (Grand Forks, N.D.) clocked in with a season-best time of 7:30.23.

"Our women responded well in the next event," Parsons said. "All in all, it was a good start to the meet. We just have to work on making up that first mistake. I feel our women can do it and the next three days will be a battle."
