GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Head women's swimming and diving coach Steve Parsons announced today that Morgan Lynch and Veronica Medon have been selected to captain the 2012-13 squad.

"Both of these young women have big roles to fill, but I have no doubt that they will be great team leaders," Parsons said.

A sophomore from Elk River, Minn., Lynch broke three UND records this year, her first full season as a Fighting Sioux. She is now the record holder in the 500 free (4:57.11), the 1,650 free (17:18.98) and the 1,000 free (10:18.41). All three times were clocked at the 2012 WAC Swimming Championship.

"Morgan has been more vocal this season than last and has really taken the team leadership to heart," Parsons said. "She knows the direction we want to take the team and has been very supportive.  Her work ethic is awesome and her leadership in the locker room will be valuable moving forward."

A junior from Huntsville, Ontario, this is the second stint at captain for Medon. Recently named the 2012 University of North Dakota Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she broke three records this past season, including two of her own. Shaving two-hundredths of a second off of her time in the 200 back, she clocked in at 1:59.62. Then in the 100 back, she bettered her own time of 56.06, touching at 55.62. She notched her final record time of the season with a mark of 2:03.86 in the 200 IM.

"Now moving into her senior season, Veronica has continued to grow into her leadership role over the past few years," Parsons said. "She performs in the pool, works hard in practice and is well respected by the team members. I think she is great selection as team captain."
