GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota men’s basketball team learned on Sunday that its opening round destination for the CollegeInsider.com Tournament will be Des Moines, Iowa to face Drake on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CT. The Sioux (17-14) punched their ticket to the CIT on Saturday with its second consecutive Great West Conference Tournament title.

UND will be making its second trip to the Knapp Center in three seasons as the squad will face a Drake team that also owns 17 victories on the season and tied for third in the Missouri Valley Conference regular season with a 9-9 record. The Bulldogs advanced to the MVC Tournament quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Creighton.

This is the second consecutive CIT appearance for head coach Brian Jones and his players. The Sioux fell 77-67 to Air Force in the opening round last season.

“We’re obviously excited to still be playing and for the opportunity to play in a location where we our fans and family can come watch us,” Jones said. “I honestly do not know a lot about this Drake team yet. I do know they can really score the basketball and have multiple weapons on the offensive end, so we’ll have a couple of days to find ways to slow them down.”

The Bulldogs defeated UND 72-63 in the last meeting between the two schools during the 2009 Hy-Vee Classic at the Knapp Center. Senior Patrick Mitchell (Des Moines, Iowa) registered his first career double-double in that contest as a sophomore. He scored 10 points and 10 rebounds in his return to his home town.

In Saturday’s GWC Championship Game, Mitchell became just the third player in UND history to connect on 200 3-pointers in a career when he went 3-for-3 in the second half. He was sitting on 199 makes entering the contest. Earlier this season, Mitchell joined the 1,000-point club.

Mitchell and sophomore Troy Huff (Milwaukee, Wis.) collected All-GWC second team honors this season. For Huff, it was his second consecutive season to earn a spot on that squad, while also earning All-GWC Tournament teams honors two years in a row.

Drake and UND are tied at four wins a piece in the all-time series with most of those meetings coming in succession during the mid-1920’s.

CIT Tournament information and a complete 2012 bracket will be available later on Sunday evening at www.collegeinsider.com/tournament/.

Second-round matchups are based on first round results and geography.
