Campbell shuts down Bluejays in series opener
Campbell went the distance, allowing only an unearned run on five hits to a Creighton club that had won three straight. It was the first complete game for a Sioux pitcher since the 2010 season (David Lind vs. NYIT, April 25).
Campbell had lasted only 9.2 innings in his first two career starts, but went the full nine in this one, striking out four and only walking two.
"That was probably the best pitching performance I have seen by one of our guys since I've been here," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "He really had their guys off-balance and was a lot of fun to watch."
Catcher Zack Trygstad (Wayzata, Minn.) provided a pair of big two-out hits for his battery mate to pace the offense. The Sioux finished with nine hits in the contest.
The sophomore backstop hit a solo home run to put UND on the board in the second, then added a run-scoring double with two outs in the sixth when the Sioux plated a pair of undearned runs.
Creighton starter Ty Blach tried to match Campbell's effort, but the Bluejays' defense let him down. The left-hander surrendered the home run to Trygstad, but the other three runs UND tallied were all unearned.
Shortstop Tyler Follis (Bemidjui, Minn.) added two hits to improve his hitting streak to eight games. Follis scored a run in the two-run sixth, then added a RBI-single in the seventh to cap the scoring.
"Creighton's starter did a really nice job for them, but we were able to scratch a couple of runs across and took advantage of some errors," Dodson added. "We also had a great game behind Campbell that helped, but his effort on the mound was the real story today."
Left fielder Riley Beck (Munich, N.D.) threw out a potential tying-run at the plate to end the fourth inning and center fielder Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn.) prevented a couple of extra-base hits with two nice running catches in the alleys.
Beck also added two hits and scored a run.
The Sioux and Bluejays will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at Noon.
