CEDAR CITY, Utah – The University of North Dakota women’s soccer team took the lead twice in Friday’s game at Southern Utah, but found itself on the losing end, as the Thunderbirds equalized after each UND goal and claimed a 3-2 win, scoring a goal in the final minute of play.

“We’re now creating chances and converting them,” head coach Matt Kellogg said. “However, our group needs to get comfortable playing with a lead.”

Southern Utah outshot North Dakota 25-4 in the contest, including a 17-2 margin in the first half, but UND capitalized on the few chances it created.

Robyn Wujkowski opened the scoring in the 15th minute beating the back line for a one-on-one with SUU’s goalkeeper Elyssa Hashimoto. Andrea Hyduke helped on the goal, which was the third on the season for Wujkowski.

However, just ten minutes later SUU equalized with a goal from Katie Jones.

Michelle Stingle then scored her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute on just the second shot of the game for UND. Kirsten Olson assisted on the play, making a high pass to Stingle, who headed it past Hashimoto.

The second goal on as many shots prompted a change in net for the Thunderbirds, as Tessa Christensen took over goalkeeper duties in the 35th minute.

UND carried the 2-1 lead into halftime, but Southern Utah scored two goals, including one in the 90th minute to pull off the comeback win.

Kristi Hestdalen made a total of seven saves in the game. Christensen picked up her first win of the season for the Thunderbirds.

North Dakota finishes off its final road game of the season on Sunday with a game against Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. (CT).
