FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota throwers Shawn Johnson and Tate Messmer each recorded personal records in the hammer throw today to open the Bison Invitational.

Johnson, a sophomore from Evelth, Minn., recorded a throw of 50.48 meters, while Messmer, a freshman from Ortonville, Minn., logged a mark of 40.50 meters.

Despite rainy weather, the duo were two of four UND throwers who advanced to the finals of the hammer throw. Sophomore Jakob Bissell (Plymouth, N.H.) placed fourth, sophomore Roman Waldera (Minot, N.D.) placed fifth, Johnson was seventh and Messmer was ninth.

UND's other competitor during the opening day of competition was sophomore Jordan Fisk (Langdon, N.D.), who took seventh in the decathlon. Fisk finised with 2,704 points.
