BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State pulled away from North Dakota in the middle innings to record a 12-6 victory in non-conference action on Wednesday at Erv Huether Field. These two teams will meet again on May 8 in Grand Forks.
The Sioux (4-25) got on the board in the first on a RBI-single by Campbell, but SDSU (12-20-1) would answer with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame and build a 4-1 advantage with three runs in the second.
Sophomore Zack Trygstad (Wayzata, Minn.) made it a one-run contest in the third when he doubled home a pair of runs with two outs.
But, the Jacks pulled ahead with big innings in the fourth and fifth, doing most of their damage by taking advantage of a trio of UND fielding errors. SDSU scored three in the fourth and added five in the fifth to push the lead to 12-3.
The Sioux put a dent in their deficit with two runs in the seventh on a RBI-groundout by Tyler Follis (Bemidji, Minn.) and another RBI-single from Campbell.
The visitors put the first two hitters on in the ninth, but could get only run across off SDSU reliever J.D. Moore, who settled down to retire the last three Sioux batters he would face.
Freshman Chris Knoll (Minnetonka, Minn.) worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Sioux, who did not allow a run after the fifth.
The Jacks only outhit the Sioux 10-9 in the contest, but did not make a fielding error. Juniors Kris Kwak (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Riley Beck (Munich, N.D.) each had two hits along with Campbell, who finished with three RBI.
Senior Zac Salfer (Sleepy Eye, Minn.) took the loss, while SDSU reliever Nick Young worked three innings to pick up the victory.
The Sioux will begin a four-game Great West series at NJIT on Friday. The schedule for that series has been altered with inclement weather forecasted for Sunday's finale.
The teams are now scheduled to play two nine-innings games on Friday starting at 2 p.m. CT. The teams will keep with their original Saturday schedule, playing a seven-inning game, then a nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
