GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota sophomore thrower Roman Waldera has been named Great West Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the week, the conference office announced on Thursday.

Competing a Saturday's South Dakota/South Dakota State double dual in Yankton, S.D., Waldera recorded a discus throw of 176 feet, 10 inches, that was seven feet longer than any other in the in the Great West Conference this season. He also eclipsed his personal record by more than 20 feet while logging one of the top throws in the region.

Waldera's throw would have put him in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships if UND was eligible (UND is in its final year of transition from Division II to Division I and will be eligible next year).

Waldera, a native of Minot, N.D., also won the hammer throw on Saturday, recording a toss of 169 feet.

The Fighting Sioux return to action April 14 at North Dakota State's Bison Classic in Fargo.
