EDINBURG, Texas - The North Dakota baseball team pounded out a season-high 18 hits on Sunday afternoon, but Texas-Pan American staged yet another late rally to knock off the Sioux 14-8 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The victory clinched a series sweep for the Broncs (20-7, 8-0 GWC), who rallied in each of their four wins over the Sioux (2-24, 0-8 GWC) this weekend.
Junior Kris Kwak (Maple Grove, Minn.) had a career-high five hits and season-high three RBI to pace the Sioux offense. Shortstop Tyler Follis (Bemidji, Minn.), pitcher Jeff Campbell (Clearwater, Fla.) and right fielder Sam Alt (Lino Lakes, Minn.) all added three hits for UND.
"We swung the bats well today and created some runs to get ahead once again," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "But, give them credit, they are a good hitting team and we didn't pitch well enough late to get to the win."
UTPA jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Broncs strung together five hits in the frame off Campbell. Kwak got two of those runs back in the second with a two-run single that made it a 3-2 contest.
The Broncs built their lead back to three at 5-2 with two runs off Campbell in the second before the right-hander settled into the contest.
The freshman hurler had his bat going in the contest as a RBI-single by him made it a 5-3 contest in the fourth, then a three-run homer in the sixth put his squad ahead for the first time in the game at 6-5. The blast was Campbell's third of the season, tying him for the team lead in that category. He equaled his career-high with four RBI.
UND would add two runs to its lead in the seventh when Kwak roped a RBI-double and Follis added a RBI-single.
But as has been the case in each of the first three games of the series, the Broncs never relented as they drove Campbell from the game in the seventh as the first six hitters reached base. That would lead to a five-run frame and a 10-8 advantage for the home team.
After reliever Brock Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) got the first two outs in the eighth, the Broncs would score four runs off the right-hander to break the game open.
Kwak got his career-high fifth hit of the game with one out in the ninth, but that was the only base runner the Sioux could muster in their final at-bat.
The Sioux will return to Kraft Field on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Minot State. Game one is scheduled to go seven innings and is slated to start at 1 p.m. The opener will be followed by a nine-inning affair.
