GREENLEY, COLO --- The University of North Dakota softball team fell 8-0 and 5-2 to Northern Colorado in a Big Sky double-header today.

Game One

In game one, North Dakota fell to Northern Colorado 8-0.

In the first inning, a pitch hit Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) landing her on first and Nicole Babrowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.) grounded out to third base advancing Bennett to second. Junior Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.) then grounded out to third base, which advanced Bennett to third but UND was unable to score the run.

Northern Colorado took a 2-0 lead in the first and scored another run in the second.

The Bears advanced their lead to six in the bottom of the fourth and UND was unable to answer back.

“Nothing seemed to go our way, but I believe you make your own luck,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “Northern Colorado did, we didn’t. The results reflect that.”

Northern Colorado scored two more runs in the fifth, making it a final 8-0 game.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, UND put up a fight but was unable to get the win in a 5-2 loss to Northern Colorado.

The first two innings were scoreless, and then UND secured the first two runs of the game in the third. Freshman Emily Bell (Elgin, Ill.) singled up the middle and freshman Taylor Hansen (Chelsea, Mich.) grounded out to the pitcher but was able to advance Bell to second. Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) singled to first base advancing Bell to third. Bennett then stole second and Nicole Babrowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.) singled to left center, bringing Bell home to score the first run of the game.

Junior Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.) grounded out to first base scoring Bennett for the 2-0 lead

The bears answered back with a run in the bottom of the third and then scoring three more runs in the fifth.

UND was unable to answer back.

“This was a game we could’ve won if we hadn’t let them score three runs in the fifth,” head coach Eric Oakley said.

Northern Colorado clinched the win after scoring their fifth run in the bottom of the sixth inning, resulting in a 5-2 victory over UND.

Ausmus became the eighth player to captain UND to a national championship.
