MINNEAPOLIS-- In-state rival North Dakota State took a doubleheader from North Dakota, 1-0 and 9-2 on the Mall of America Field at the Metrodome Friday evening in non-conference action.  The Bison got a walk-off win the opener to spoil a gem by Alex Twenge and posted early runs in the nightcap to earn the sweep.

UND (7-9-1) turned to Twenge to get the series off on the right note and he delivered. Coming into Friday, the sophomore right-hander was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in three starts. He lowered that ERA nearly a full run after 6.1 innings of one-run baseball.

Twenge was locked into a pitcher's duel with NDSU's John Straka, who was also throwing a shutout through six innings. UND had the early edge in hits and had a couple innings that in which Straka had to work out of jams to keep the scoreless tie. In the third, UND got back-to-back one-out singles from Jacob Threlkeld and Kris Kwak to eventually put runners on second and third. From there, Straka struck out five straight batters and did not allow another hit until Taylor Petersen's single in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Zack Trygstad singled but Straka again got two more Ks to finish with 10 on the evening in improving to 4-0 overall. NDSU (12-9) got its run in the seventh on a pair of singles followed by a one-out knock to right center to end it.

Twenge took the tough-luck loss, scattering six hits with just one run and three walks with three strikeouts. Kwak had a pair of hits in the opener.

"It was a great game by Twenge and Straka in game one," UND Head Baseball Coach Jeff Dodson said. "We couldn't push across runs in a couple different situations and game two Andrew Thome didn't have his best stuff. He still competed, but we took too many strikeouts offensively to take away our chances to create anything against their staff."

In game two, NDSU jumped ahead early, scoring in each of the first three frames to take a 6-2 lead. North Dakota's runs came in the second and third innings. Threlkeld's single to right scored the first UND run then Jeff Campbell delivered the second score with a fielder's choice.

NDSU tacked-on a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 9-2 advantage. Luis Calvo had a one-out pinch hit in the ninth and came around to score on Trygstad's single to right for UND's third run.

Thome pitched five innings, allowing seven runs with seven strikeouts and three walks. His record fell to 2-3 on the season. North Dakota churned-out nine hits in game two, three coming from Tyler Follis with two more from Ryan Reese.

The teams finish the series Saturday with another doubleheader set for a 12:15 p.m. start at the Metrodome.
