GRAND FORKS, N.D. – With the cross country season fast approaching, the Big Sky Conference released today its 2013 cross country preseason poll.
UND’s women’s team was ranked eighth, a jump of two spots from a year ago when the program was embarking on its first season as a Big Sky member. The men’s team was ranked ninth in the poll for the second time in as many years.
Six-time defending conference champion Northern Arizona was the unanimous choice atop the men’s poll, garnering all 11 first-place votes, while 2012 women’s champion Weber State was picked to defend its title with nine of 11 first-place votes. NAU and Southern Utah received the remaining two first-place votes.
UND head coach Dick Clay returns for his 29th season at the helm of UND’s women’s program and his fourth in charge of the men’s program. Last season, he guided the women to a seventh-place Big Sky finish and a 22nd-place showing at the NCAA Midwest Regional. His men’s team placed eight in the conference, 24th at regionals and earned the program’s first appearance in the Division I regional rankings.
UND will open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, at North Dakota Stat’s Bison Invitational.
