NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Junior Kris Kwak (Maple Grove, Minn.) was named the Great West Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday by league officials after batting over .500 in the Chicago State series.
The Sioux took three of four from the Cougars as Kwak went 9-for-16 (.563) in the series and capped the regular season with two home runs and a career-high five RBI in the 20-8 victory in game four. Kwak also had two doubles and finished the four-game set with seven RBI to become the first Sioux to earn the league's player of the week honors this season.
Freshman Andrew Thome (St. Cloud, Minn.), who led the Sioux to a 1-0 victory over NJIT in the opening round of the GWC Tournament earlier Tuesday, was named the league's pitcher of the week on three occasions.
For Kwak, this is his first weekly honor of his career. He has a 10-game hitting streak going into the second round of the GWC Tournament after going 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair of singles.
The Sioux will play the winner of No. 2 UTPA/No. 7 Chicago State on Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. CT.
