Baseball lands eight on Great West Academic Team

NAPERVILLE, Ill.-- Eight University of North Dakota baseball players were named to the 2012-13 Winter/Spring Academic All-Great West Conference Team announced Thursday by league officials. UND led all GWC baseball teams in honorees and had one of five individual perfect 4.0 grade point averages among the 152 total selected in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field and women's golf.

"I am very proud of the commitment that our baseball players have to being great in the classroom," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "It makes my job easier to know that they are putting themselves in a great position to prepare for great opportunities in their career field after their playing days are over.

"We had our first-ever team grade point average of 3.0 or higher this year and to do it with some of the travel issues we encounter throughout the season speaks volumes about the character and integrity of the young men that wear the UND uniform."

The Great West Academic Team is comprised of athletes with a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. Using the institutions’ most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution’s sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
