GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- A four-day strength and conditioning challenge recently saw UND baseball athletes performing in various activities in a Green versus Black Team challenge. The team was split into two squads and points were awarded for weight lifting, tire flipping and tug-of-war, among others before the final day's "eliminator".

"We try to promote a competitive atmosphere with everything we do in our program and to end the fall with the toughest set of physical challenges that we can place on our players," UND head baseball coach Jeff Dodson said. "Being a successful Division I program is genereally determined by how you perform in uncomfortable situations, so the more uncomfortable we can make it on our guys now, the easier it will be in a game. We've got a lot of competition at a lot of spots and this will help us determine who's going to be in the lineup for us in the big games."

The events on day one included squats, a dumb bell bench, peeping toms and a prowler relay. A push-up contest over a two-minute time span started day three of the challenge. A "farmer's walk" had players walk with 100-lb. dumbbells in each hand and get as far as possible without readjusting grip. The buddy drag relay started with a player sprinting one lap then proceeding to underarm drag a buddy (walking backwards) across the line, then the next player repeating the same steps. A speed ball event with a soccer ball ended day three.

A unique challenge called the 3-person bar relay had groups of three do a 50-yard shuttle with one person hanging from the bar while the other two carry it and switch until they reach the 150-yard finish line. The day ended with a 300-yard shuttle relay. Their strength was tested again in a team-vs-team tug-of-war.

The final day was the eliminator. It featured prowlers, buddy drag, wheel barrows, a plate stack relay and a half-mile sprint. Check out the video posted at the top of this article or watch UND Insider for a closer look at the Championship Challenge. Senior catcher Taylor Petersen was crowned the individual champion while the green team took home the intrasquad crown.

The team is prepping in the offseason for its first season in the Western Athletic Conference. The season gets underway Feb. 28 at the University of Kansas.
