"We fell behind with a couple big innings early and we didn't recover well from it," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "I thought their guy did a nice job on the mound today, we just didn't get some key hits. We'll get ready for Wednesday night against North Dakota State."
UND (9-23. 8-10 WAC) answered the first UTPA (22-27, 12-9) inning with a three-spot of its own in the third. It started with a one-out double by Jacob Threlkeld followed by a run-scoring single by Patrick Riewer. After Tyler Follis singled to center, Taylor Petersen hit his team-leading 12th double of the season to plate two more and tie the score at 3-3.
The Broncs answered in the bottom of that frame with three runs before UND got an unearned tally in the fourth. Threlkeld's sacrifice fly produced that fourth run, but it would be all that North Dakota could muster against UTPA starter Alex Henson, who pitched 8.2 innings, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts.
Alex Twenge was saddled with the loss, going 2.1 innings with six runs on four hits and three walks. Reid Jungling ate innings in middle relief, going 4.2 frames before Tyler Ruemmele pitched a scoreless eighth.
UND totaled eight hits, two apiece coming from Riewer, Threlkeld and Dalton Parrott.
North Dakota will open a five-game homestand Wednesday when it hosts arch-rival North Dakota State in non-conference action. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Kraft Memorial Field. Watch live on UNDsports.com or listen on 1440 KKXL-AM.
