GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota Athletics Department mourns the loss of UND Athletics Hall of Famer Nancy (Demmers) Nelson, who passed away Saturday in Grand Forks.

Born in Aberdeen, S.D., Nancy (Demmers) Nelson earned her bachelor's degree in education from UND in 1971 after an illustrious and multi-faceted athletic career. She played four years of basketball at UND from 1966-70, three years of volleyball from 1967-70, two years of field hockey from 1968-70 and one year each of golf, softball and swimming.

Nelson earned team MVP honors in both basketball and volleyball and won the Grace O. Rhonemus Award as UND's Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She also coached UND's women's basketball team in 1972-73 and was also a member of Delta Psi Kappa, the women's physical education honorary.

In 1994, Nelson was inducted into the UND Athletics Hall of Fame.
