GRAND FORKS, N.D.—The University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2012-13 season Friday, hosting St. Cloud State and Nebraska at the Hyslop pool. UND came away with a split, defeating SCSU 147-85 while falling to NU, 135-97.

Freshman Caitlin Quon (Richmond, B.C., Canada) started her collegiate career on a nice note, winning the 1000 meter freestyle in 10:28.21, nearly nine seconds ahead of the closest competition. Senior co-captain Veronica Medon (Hunstville, Ont., Canada) and Quon went one-two in the 200 IM with Medon touching in 2:10.42.  Medon later took the 200 backstroke with a 2:04.50 clocking. Quon picked-up her third strong performance with a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:10.54). Morgan Lynch (Elk River, Minn.) and Ali Church (Grand Forks, N.D.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in that event.

Junior Kelsey Richels (Wahpeton, N.D.) won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.14 with Church grabbing fourth in 1:57.27.  Courtney Funk (Minot, N.D.) led a group of three UND swimmers in the top four in the 50 free with her 24.34 time. Freshman Madeline Smith (Fargo, N.D.) was runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:10.59) with teammate Allison Maxwell (Rogers, Minn.) touching right behind (2:12.03).

All told, UND had nine finishes in the top two on Friday.

All three schools are back in action Saturday morning at Hyslop pool for separate dual meets. Action begins at 11:00 a.m.
