Men fall to St. Cloud State in season opener

GRAND FORKS, N.D.—The University of North Dakota men's swimming and diving teams opened their 2012-13 season Friday, hosting St. Cloud State at the Hyslop pool. The UND men dropped a 137-95 decision to their former North Central Conference rival Huskies of SCSU on day one.

Freshman Aaron Chanas-LaRue (Winnipeg, Man., Canada) totaled three runner-up finishes in his first collegiate meet. He started with a second place in the 1000 freestyle and he later grabbed two other impressive finishes (200 IM, 500 free). Senior George Philbin (Plymouth, Minn.) won the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.37 time, easily outdistancing his competitors. He also took second in the 100 freestyle, an event that saw three UND swimmers in the top four. Sophomore Wesley Schultz (Tehachapi, Calif.) returned to the pool following a one-year absence and took second in the 50 freestyle (21.72) and third in the 100 free.

Junior Adam Gannon (Plymouth, Minn.) led a UND one-two-three finish in the 200 IM, winning the race with ease in 1:55.67. Chanas-LaRue and sophomore Austin Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) were second and third, respectively. Smith was also second in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.29). Freshman Matt Koken (Woodbury, Minn.) won the 200 butterfly, going under two minutes (1:59.72) in the process. Sophomore Ethan Shrader (Butte, Mont.) was second in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.34.

Rick Eberle (Fort Collins, Colo.) placed second frmom both diving boards, going 310.95 from the 3-meter before totaling 301.55 points to place second from the short board.

UND and St. Cloud State will meet again Saturday morning at Hyslop pool for another dual meet. Action is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
