Men's swimmers best USD in home dual

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- The University of North Dakota men's swimming and diving team defeated rival University of South Dakota, 153-132 in a dual Saturday afternoon at Hyslop pool.

UND got the meet underway with a win in the 200 medley relay, narrowly edging the USD squad by .44 (1:37.44). George Philbin and Zak Gosney went one-two in the 1000 freestyle with Philbin etching a 10:14.14 winning time. Aaron Chanas-LaRue (1:43.66) nipped teammate Adam Gannon in the 200 freestyle, touching just .23 ahead for the win, part of his two first-place finishes on the day. He came back to take the 200 backstroke in a 1:57.90 time.

Gannon would later win the 100 freestyle in 47.75 just ahead of Philbin. Austin Smith went sub-one minute in the 100 breaststroke, winning in 59.03 as UND took the top three spots in that event. Ian Ballantyne and Wesley Schultz were right on his heels for second and third place, respectively. Smith then also won the 200 breast event, easily outpacing the field in 2:12.65.

Matt Koken won the 200 fly, touching in 1:57.53. Ian McKenzie led a one-two-three UND showing in the 50 freestyle, grabbing the win with a 21.97 clocking. Gosney (22.26) and Colin MacQuarrie (22.66) were close behind.

Rick Eberle won the 3-meter dive, scoring 294.96 while Clayton Metcalf (250.95) and Andrew Germain (247.13) were third and fourth, respectively.

UND will next compete at Kansas, facing the host Jayhawks on Nov. 2-3.
