GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- North Dakota opened its 2017-18 schedule with an impressive 99-35 home exhibition win over Minnesota Morris Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Three Fighting Hawks were in double figures scoring, led by preseason All-Big Sky Conference player junior Lexi Klabo with 19. Junior transfer Melissa Dailey poured in 17 while junior Fallyn Freije posted 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in the win.
UND clamped down defensively, as the Cougars' returning leading scorer Elli Stevenson managed just one field goal and was 1-for-7 from the floor with eight turnovers before fouling out in the fourth quarter. UMM shot just 26 percent from the floor for the game as a team.
One of the Cougars' 12 field goal makes came early in the first for a 3-2 lead for the visitors. It was all Fighting Hawks thereafter as UND ripped off 17 straight points to lead comfortably before a 27-9 cushion at the end of the first.
At halftime, it was a commanding 56-18 lead for the home team with the Hawks shooting 63 percent at the break. Melissa Dailey had 15 points in the opening half on 3-of-5 from distance. Meanwhile, the Cougars managed just seven field goals and 29 percent shooting from the floor in the first half.
All 12 Fighting Hawk players that dressed scored and grabbed at least one rebound with no player logging more than 20 minutes.
North Dakota plays host to one more exhibition, this Wednesday evening at the Betty against Minnesota Crookston. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
