North Dakota heads to its second non-conference tournament, a five-game weekend at Arizona State beginning Friday. UND will get Texas State twice, the host Sun Devils, San Diego and Illinois State in the three days in Tempe, Ariz.
UND will have three games against teams in or receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25. Arizona State checks in at No. 18 in the first regular season poll while Texas State is receiving votes this week.
Senior Taylor Nadler was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after driving in 10 runs in five games last week. The senior hit safely in all five games, extending her hittinjg streak to seven. She drove in runs in four of the games, including two RBI hits in the first inning alone of Sunday’s win at South Carolina State.
Sophomore Angel Love tripled twice and had a career-best four hits in the Feb. 10 win over North Carolina A&T. She was a homer shy of the cycle in the win. Love also stole three bases in the Feb. 8 at Charleston Southern. She hit .500 (7-14) for the opening weekend.
Senior Taylor Nadler racked up 10 RBI in the opening weekend, notching three in a game on two different occasions. She had at least one RBI in all but one game and extended her hitting streak to seven straight, dating back to last season.
TWO DOZEN FOR BERGH
Hannah Bergh’s win against North Carolina A&T at Charleston Southern on Feb. 10 gave her 24 career wins, which cracked the top 10 all-time at North Dakota.
MAYHOOD UP TO NO GOOD
Lexi Mayhood whacked her first career dinger Feb. 9 against Towson. She totaled three hits in the opening weekend to surpass her hit total from all of last season.
THIS ONE GOES TO ELEVEN
Senior Kaylin VanDomelen had six hits, four walks and a hit by pitch to reach base 11 times in the opening weekend. Her on-base percentage was a team-high .579 among UND starters. She scored eight times this past weekend, also tops on her team.
UND senior Kaylin vanDomelen led North Dakota in the circle and at the plate last season. She won 12 games with a 1.95 ERA and 171Ks in the circle, while hitting .333 with 8 bombs and 26 RBIs on offense.
PITCHER OF THE YEAR
VanDomelen earned the school’s first-ever Big Sky Pitcher of the Year after leading the Fighting Hawks to the program’s first Big Sky Tournament appearance.
BOPPERS ARE BACK
UND has 29 of its 32 homers returning to the lineup, including: Kaylin VanDomelen (8), Taylor Nadler (7), Marina Marzolino (7), Dani Romero (6) and Alicia Young (1).
I GOT FIVE ON IT
North Dakota was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
North Dakota’s leading base stealer, Victoria Minor, returns for 2018. She swiped nine bags in 11 attempts last season as UND was 38 for 43 overall as a team.
OFF TO OGDEN
The Big Sky Conference will host the conference tournament in Ogden, Utah on the campus of Weber State University. WSU also hosted last season’s tournament in the old format of regular season champion hosting the six-team postseason tournament. This year, league officials went to a pre-determined site. UND is in the final season in the Big Sky Conference and will move to The Summit League next season.
