GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota senior captain Austin Poganski has been named a 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award First-Team All-American, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Poganski had been one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award in men’s hockey, which honors NCAA Division I seniors who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The award went to Notre Dame forward Jake Evans.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Poganski recently completed his collegiate eligibility at North Dakota and signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the St. Louis Blues, who drafted Poganski in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft. A 6-foot-2, 210-pound winger, Poganski appeared in 166 career games and collected 37 goals and 84 points with a plus-33 rating. The St. Cloud, Minn., native closed out his career with a streak of 155 consecutive games played that dated back to his freshman season.

Poganski reached the 10-goal and 20-point plateaus in each of his final three seasons, scoring a career-high 12 goals in 2016-17 and matching his personal-best of 25 points that same season. North Dakota’s team captain in 2017-18, he was one of four finalists for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s (NCHC) Sportsmanship Award.

Poganski was a four-time selection to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and was a two-time NCHC Scholar-Athlete. He was the co-recipient of UND’s Coaches’ Unsung Hero Award in 2016-17 and was the team’s Most Improved Player as a sophomore in 2015-16 after helping lead the Fighting Hawks to the program’s eighth national championship and second straight NCHC regular-season title.

An active member of the community, Poganski logged more than 70 hours of volunteer service during his four years at UND.
