Men's hockey schedule features return of Subway Holiday Classic

GRAND FORKS, N.D. University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison and head men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol announced today the 2009-10 men’s hockey schedule, which will feature 36 regular season games, including 18 at home and 18 on the road.


With two home exhibition games also on the schedule, Sioux fans will have the opportunity to see UND play on 20 home dates.


Highlighting the home schedule are seven Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. WCHA rivals scheduled to visit Ralph Engelstad Arena in 2009-10 are Minnesota (Oct. 16-17), St. Cloud State (Nov. 13-14), Wisconsin (Dec. 11-12), Minnesota State (Jan. 8-9), Denver (Jan. 29-30), Minnesota Duluth (Feb. 19-20) and Michigan Tech (March 5-6).


UND will also host the Subway Holiday Classic Nov. 27-28, which will include Miami (Ohio), Ohio State and Bemidji State. All three teams qualified for the 2009 NCAA postseason tournament, with Miami and Bemidji State advancing to the NCAA Frozen Four.


In other non-conference home action, UND will host Merrimack Oct. 9-10 to open the regular season. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Sioux and the Warriors, who compete in the Hockey East Association.


The Fighting Sioux, who advanced to their seventh straight NCAA tournament and 24th overall last season, will open the 2009-10 with an exhibition game against the University of Manitoba on Oct. 4 at Engelstad Arena. UND will also host the United States World Junior team on Dec. 19.


UND’s road schedule includes an appearance at Notre Dame’s Shillelagh Tournament, which will feature Colgate and Niagara in addition to the host Fighting Irish.


The Sioux will also travel to Cornell Jan. 22-23 in non-conference road action. The Big Red went 22-10-4 last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the 17th time in school history.


UND went 24-15-4 overall last season and won the MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular season champions with a 17-7-4 league record. It was a WCHA-leading 14th conference championship for the Sioux.


UND had three players named to the All-Big Sky First Team on Tuesday and running back John Santiago was named the league's Co-Freshman of the Year.
