DES MOINES, Iowa -- For the second straight day, North Dakota junior thrower Shawn Johnson enjoyed a standout effort at Drake University's 37th annual Jim Duncan Invitational.
One day after winning the shot put, Johnson was the runner-up in the discus and placed eighth in the hammer throw. The Eveleth, Minn., native had a discus mark of 49.58 meters (162 feet, 8 inches), while recording a hammer throw of 53.66 meters (176 feet).
Yesterday, Johnson won the shot put with a mark of 16.53 meters (54 feet, 2 ¾ inches).
Three other juniors also recorded notable finishes for North Dakota. Ross Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) was the runner-up in the 10,000-meter race with apersonal-record time of 32 minutes, 40.21 seconds.
Teammate Kyle Economy (Victoria, Minn.) was ninth with a time of 33:23.54.
In the 5,000-meters, Sam Saccoman (Hibbing, Minn.) was seventh with a time of 15:07.83, which was a new personal record. Freshman Parker Wharram (Independence, Minn.) also established a PR in the 5K with a time of 15:34.77.
UND is back in action next weekend with four different meets in the sate of California.
