DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freshman Ke-Ke Burks enjoyed a historic performance today at Drake University's 37th annual Jim Duncan Invitational.

Burks, a native of Madison, Wis., broke the school record in the hammer throw, in the process qualifying for the USA Track and Field Junior National Championship. Her mark of 51.47 meters (168 feet, 10 inches) was also the top hammer throw by a Big Sky Conference freshman this season.

UND's only other competitor during day two of the meet was another freshman thrower, Jayd Eggert (Minot, N.D.), who was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 42.40 meters (139 feet, 1 inch).

In yesterday's action:

The distance duo of Erin Wysocki (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Lydia Lutz (Fr., Park Rapids, Minn.) each clocked Big Sky automatic qualifying times in the 5,000-meters. Wysocki clocked a time of 18 minutes, 2.58 seconds, while Lutz came in at 18:10.14.

Both runners eclipsed their respective personal records by more than 40 seconds in the process.

A third UND distance runner, freshman Jami Johnson, missed an auto qualifier in the event by only three seconds, but shattered her personal record by 42 seconds. The Glasgow, Mont., native clocked a time of 18:33.58.

In the throws, freshman Molly Griep (Whitewater, Wis.) placed sixth in the discus with a mark of 41.97 meters (137 feet, 4 inches).

UND returns to action next weekend at four different meets in California.

Notes: Burks is the second UND student-athlete to ever qualify for the USA Track and Field Junior National Championship after Eggert qualified in the javelin in March.
