BOZEMAN, Mont. – As they have done all season long, junior Nate Peterson and senior Sam Saccoman once again led North Dakota today at the 2013 Big Sky Cross Country Championship.

The duo finished 28th and 32nd, respectively, guiding North Dakota to an eighth-place finish in the team standings. Peterson ran a time of 26 minutes, 4.54 seconds, while Saccoman crossed the finish line in 26:11.65.

Northern Arizona won the conference championship, placing the top three runners in the race. NAU’s Matt McElroy took medalist honors with a time of 24:32.19, narrowly edging teammate Brian Shrader (24:32.28).

“The men ran really well,” said UND head coach Dick Clay. “Nate and Sam moved up about 10 spots from last year, so that’s a really nice improvement for them.”

With a team total of 219, UND was able to top Montana, Portland State and Northern Colorado in the 11-team standings, repeating its eighth-place finish of a year ago.

“Overall, that was kind of our goal – to finish somewhere between sixth and 10th place,” said Clay. “Everyone went out exactly where we hoped, either maintaining or slightly improving their times, so I’m really pleased with that.”

UND will compete in the Saint John’s Fall Finale on Nov. 8.
