WICHITA, Kan. – The University of North Dakota softball team dropped a 13-2 decision to Iowa State on Saturday at the Shocker Softball Classic in Wichita, Kan.

“We hit the ball hard, we just didn’t get them to fall, but that will come around eventually for us,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “In the meantime we need to play less tentatively on defense.”

UND got on the board first for the second straight game. After Rachel Waynick got on base being walked, she stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. A single to right field by D Jantzer scored Waynick as North Dakota took the early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Cyclones loaded the bases, but UND’s defense shut the door, getting the final out as Iowa State only managed one hit in the inning with three stranded on base.

Unfortunately, Iowa State wouldn’t be kept off the board for long and an eight-run second inning propelled them into the lead. ISU scored five more runs in the following two innings to extend its lead to 13-1.

In the top of the fifth, Kim Granata hit her first home run of the season to give UND its second run of the day. Following Granata’s homer, Amanda Johnson reached first on an error and D Janzter singled to put Johnson in scoring position. However, ISU got the final out of the inning to end the game.

Freshman Sophie Pratt started for UND in the circle, pitching 1.2 innings. Taylor Hansen closed out the game for UND, pitching 2.0 innings.

UND recorded a total of four hits in the game, with two coming from Jantzer. Freshman Jackie Lilek recorded her first collegiate hit with a single to lead off the second inning for UND.

North Dakota finishes the Shocker Softball Classic with two games on Sunday, taking on San Diego State at 10 a.m. and Northern Illinois at 12:30 p.m.
