FARGO, N.D.-- Senior Patrick Riewer pitched a complete game in his first career start in a UND uniform, lifting visiting North Dakota past North Dakota State, 4-3, Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Newman Outdoor Field. Riewer threw 135 pitches and did not allow a run past the third inning as North Dakota picked up its first non-conference win of the season.

"Patrick just got stronger as the game went along," UND head coach Jeff Dodson. "I kept asking him how he was doing and I got the vibe to just leave him alone, so I did. He didn't lose velocity, he didn't lose anything on any of his pitches. He gave us an opportunity to save the arms for this weekend."

In a game that many times is used to give bullpen arms some work, Riewer made sure that the 'pen would be fully rested going into a key weekend series at Texas-Pan American. The senior transfer took the ball in a start for the first time at UND and never gave it up, settling in nicely after falling behind 3-0 through three innings.

That third Bison run was unearned and gave the home team a lead for NDSU starter Zach Mayo, who allowed just a pair of hits in four innings. In the fifth, however, NDSU went to the bullpen and UND went to work. After Riewer started the inning with a solid hit to right, Daniel Lockhert followed with hit by pitch. Taylor Petersen delivered the first run with a shot through the left side.

Jeff Campbell worked his way aboard on a walk, coming back from a 0-2 count to do so and loading the bases. Ryan Reese reached on an infield error to score another run and then Dalton Parrott coaxed a walk to tie the score.

NDSU wriggled free from the jam with as a would-be run on a sacrifice fly was waived off and a strikeout ended the inning. UND would take the lead in the top of the next inning with another Petersen hit and a run scoring double off the bat of Campbell for a 4-3 advantage.

Riewer made it hold up, cruising through the sixth and seventh innings in order before working out of a two-on, two-on jam in the eighth. The righty rared back and got a strikeout looking to end the threat, one of his six punchouts in the win.

In the ninth, a one-out walk and a single created some drama but Riewer got a tailor-made double play bounceout to third to end it. All told, Riewer allowed just one extra-base hit and lowered his season ERA to 2.14 (four appearances).

Petersen had three hits and reached base four times for UND. Campbell, Reese and Parrott all added RBIs for the visitors.

UND will return to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend when it travels to Texas-Pan American for three games beginning Friday.
