Grand Forks, N.D. — Veteran sportscaster Jack Michaels has been selected to become the new radio play-by-play announcer for University of North Dakota football broadcasts. Michaels, who is also the new sports director at Radio Fargo-Moorhead, is a native of Williston and has spent more than 20 years broadcasting in the Northern Plains.

“We are very excited to have Jack Michaels join us as the voice of Fighting Sioux football,” UND Athletics Director Brian Faison said.  “Jack is a well-known and highly-respected radio personality throughout the Midwest.”

Head coach Chris Mussman echoed those sentiments.  “Everyone in North Dakota knows the voice of Jack Michaels and to have him affiliated with our program is fantastic.”

Michaels’ most recent stint was as the sports director at Clear Channel Bismarck and play-by-play announcer for the University of Mary for the past five seasons.

"This is a great opportunity to be a part of Sioux football,” Michaels said. “I'm looking forward to joining a great broadcast team and bringing the excitement of UND football to Sioux fans across the network.

“In my broadcasting career, I have been fortunate to be a part of several great schools and organizations, and now to be able to bring my passion for play-by-play to UND is truly exciting. The university has such a rich tradition along with loyal and passionate fans. I cannot wait to be a part of that."

His career includes radio announcing stops with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, MSU-Moorhead, North Dakota State as well as two decades worth of play-by-play announcing of high school sports across North Dakota.

Michaels has television experience in Fargo, Bismarck and with Midwest Sports Channel.  He also served as host of the Minnesota Viking Update in Fargo.

UND plays its annual Green-White spring game on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at the Alerus Center and opens the 2011 regular season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Drake.
