NYIT outlasts NJIT in pitchers' battle

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- NYIT pitcher Marcos Perez came in with only three game rest, but it didn't matter much for the freshman from Bronx, N.Y. Perez pitched a complete game, striking out nine and allowing three hits, as NYIT outlasted NJIT 3-2 in the first round of the Great West Conference baseball tournament.

The game was tied 2-2 for much of the middle innings. NYIT pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh. Ali Rodriguez reached on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Rob Cafiero sent him home on a sacrifice fly and a 3-2 lead.

It was Cafiero's second RBI of the game. His first tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Cafiero got a hold of a fast ball and drove it off the Kraft Field scoreboard for a solo home run.

NJIT had taken a 2-1 lead in the previous inning. Jeff Peterson batted one in on a double. Later Anothny Caiola sent home Peterson with a single.

Mark Leiter pitched an eight-inning, complete game for NJIT. He struck out eight in the losing effort.

NYIT will play Utah Valley tomorrow at 4 p.m. NJIT will face Chicago State at 10 a.m.
