GRAND FORKS, ND - NJIT will stay another day after eliminating Chicago State with a 5-2 victory in the first loser's bracket game on day two of the 2011 Great West Conference Tournament.

The Highlanders moved out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a brief string of singles through the infield and then upped the lead by one more in the second.

After three innings without a run from either side, the Cougars put their first mark on the board as shortstop Michael Carpen knocked a triple to right center and then was brought home on the next at bat. NJIT answered quickly with a run of its own as catcher Bryan Bleakley led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to center, then advanced to third on a CSU error. He scored later in the frame to make it a 5-1 contest.

Chicago State posted one more run in the top of the eighth, but NJIT silenced the Cougars through the remainder of the game.

Winning pitcher Tripp Davis (6-6) fanned 10 batters over nine innings of work and allowed just five hits to post the complete-game victory.

NJIT will now face either No. 3 Houston Baptist or No. 7 North Dakota in the consolation quarterfinals at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. HBU and UND will face off tonight at 7 p.m. in the final game of the tournament championship quarterfinals.

Mia Loyd had 10 points in UND's 33-point fourth quarter.
