Are you ready for Fighting Sioux football? With fall camp around the corner, we're counting down the days to the return of UND football. With 15 days to go until the pigskin flies through the air for the first time, we'll be previewing all 11 UND opponents during that stretch right here on FightingSioux.com.
Countdown to football: 15 days
Game 7
Who: Cal Poly
What: Homecoming 2011
When: Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
Where: Alerus Center
Why: Homecoming. One word, but it means so much to many people. Throughout the weekend events are scheduled as thousands of alumni return to campus to celebrate the university and cheer on UND.
For the football team, this game is key for the Great West standings. It's the first home conference game for the Sioux against a team picked to finish second in the league. Many think the Mustangs are talented enough to win the Great West this season.
Cal Poly returns Buck Buchanan Award candidate Asa Jackson and first-team All-GWC honoree Mark Rodgers. Jackson is a four-year starting cornerback and punt returner. Rodgers is a talented slotback in Poly's triple-option offense.
Two things UND has in it's favor is the Alerus Center crowd and the schedule. UND will be coming off a bye entering this game, while the Mustangs face Southern Utah.
The loud, Alerus Center, Homecoming crowd will play a key for the Sioux. The game typically boasts the largest crowd of the season, and no doubt, will energize the UND football team.
