GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head baseball coach Jeff Dodson announced the addition of Luis Calvo to his 2012-13 recruiting class on Friday. Salvo signed a National Letter of Intent earlier this week to play his college baseball for UND.

“We are excited to add Luis to this year’s recruiting class,” Dodson said. “He is still developing physically, but the sky is the limit for what we think he can accomplish here. He is a slick fielding middle infielder with really good range and is developing some pop at the plate. Luis has played at a very high level of baseball in both high school and summer ball and that should make an easier transition for him into the college ranks.”

Calvo prepped at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School in Tampa, Fla., where he was a three-year starter in the middle infield and named Team MVP as a senior. The six-foot, 185-pounder was also the team captain during both his junior and senior campaigns.

“I wanted to come to UND to explore new opportunities,” Calvo said. “The program and the coaches seemed like a good fit and I have a good friend up there that I have played with before. All of those things factored into my decision.”

Calvo, who hit nearly .300 and belted four home runs as a senior, is the second recruit from Florida to sign with UND in the past two seasons as both he and former Tampa Dawg Pound teammate Jeff Campbell (Clearwater, Fla.) hail from the Sunshine State. The Florida duo played their summer baseball together under the guidance of former Major Leaguer Reggie Williams.

“We’ve built a good relationship down in Florida with Reggie and his academy over the past couple of years,” Dodson said. “And, we all saw the type of year Jeff had for us this past season, so we know what type of players he is producing down there.”

Calvo will enroll at UND in the fall and be eligible to play during the 2013 season.
