GRAND FORKS -- Work continues inside the Alerus Center, as the crews install new AstroTurf for the 2012 season.

Work is nearly completed on the underground pit, where the turf is stored when rolled. The area had to be redone, as the new turf requires more space and updated motors for rolling. The pit area is complete, however, work on the mechanics continues.

Above ground, crews are laying the multi-ply backing, which serves as the base layer for the turf. According to AstroTurf, the backing is "covered with a heavy urethane coating for uniformity, consistency and precise performance across the entire field. This secondary backing is developed with environmentally friendly BioCelTM technology which uses renewable resources to extend product life and reduce landfill waste, while improving outdoor air quality."

Turf installation begins next week.
