GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Three North Dakota players tallied double-digit kill totals as UND swept past rival South Dakota, 25-18, 26-24, 25-10 Friday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. BESC played host to a pair of entertaining matches Friday night as Green Bay toppled Stephen F. Austin in a grueling five-set affair before UND took down the Coyotes in the second match of the UND Classic.
UND (2-2) went to junior co-captain Lisa Parlich plenty in the opening set and the junior produced six kills on eight swings-- part of her match-high 15 kills-- helping North Dakota to a 25-18 win. It was a closely-contested set throughout until a 6-2 spurt closed out the first set and set the tone for the night.
South Dakota (3-2) rebounded, however, and got off to a quick 5-2 jump in the second set. That's when sophomore Lexi Robinson powered home one of her dozen kills to spark a quick 3-0 run to knot the score. Another Parlich kill polished off a 5-1 stretch for UND, forcing a timeout as the home team took its largest lead of the set, 15-11.
The Coyotes rallied and eventually re-tied the score at 19-apiece and took a 23-21 advantage before UND used its second timeout. Out of the stoppage, UND got a sideout on a service error, then Nikki Husfeldt set up Robinson multiple times to surgically sew up the set. Robinson's kill from the right side tied it at 23-23, then two more finishes from the Ramsey, Minn. native gave a BESC crowd of 863 fans plenty to cheer about with UND taking a two sets to none lead.
That late UND rally seemed to deflate the visitors and UND took advantage. After the Coyotes got the first two points thanks to two UND attack errors, North Dakota unleashed eight of the next nine points and then later went on a 10-2 run to exhaust USD of both its timeouts in the process. The attempt to quell the momentum was unsuccessful with Felicia Ulrich garnering a half-dozen finishes in the final set to give her 12 kills in a balanced UND attack.
North Dakota hit a robust .531 in the final set and hit a season-best .340 for the match in evening its record. Robinson dug 13 balls for her second double-double of the season. Husfeldt had 49 helpers for North Dakota.
