GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota track and field program unveiled a significant addition to its practice facilities this week with the construction of the Gill NCAA Double Ring Tall hammer cage.

The first-ever hammer cage at North Dakota, it is the same model that was used at the 2008 Olympic trials hammer throw and is built to the specifications required to host an NCAA championship. The cage, which also enhances training safety for UND's student-athletes, puts the program's throwing facilities on par with nearly every school in the nation.

"I'm really excited we now have this opportunity for our throwers, who will have the ability to compete in the Big Sky Conference," said UND head track and field coach Kevin Galbraith. "Our track program now has a final piece of equipment that we've never had before and really needed. I'm excited to drive by and see that thing every day."

A 30'x10' concrete slab was also installed adjacent to the hammer cage to utilize for additional drills and for potential extra circles in the future.

"It shows a commitment, not just by the program, but by the administration and by the entire University, to dedicate the space and resources to the project. It was a must-have. It's an exciting time for us," said assistant track and field coach Peter Miller, who coaches UND's throwers.

The UND track and field program worked closely with Ae2s of Grand Forks to plan the construction and installation of the hammer cage.
